Concerning memory usage i have just for the lulz of it compared memory usage of OpenSuse 13.1 x64 and Mint 17 Cinnamon x64. Funny enough CPU behaves different. Maybe this was the case why Cinnamon was sluggish on this machine (1225b), cuz CPU is its weakest point. Suse - everything works fine.
As i said in the last post that i got interested in using KDE not only on SuSe on laptop and Netrunner on Desktop. But also on CentOS and Debian (on Server(virtualization for example) and NAS for example, respectively).
And then it finally struck me. I have always had difficulties with Mint. More look and feel kind of difficulties. When it still used Gnome 2 i didnt like the fact that they made it look like winblows of some kind. And also i dont somehow fancy its green theme (But i do like the Suses Green (How comes? I dont know, you tell me)). And new Cinnamon (and everything Gnome 3 based seems sluggish to me). But the KDE4 that i have discovered with the help of Suse, seems to just perfectly just work for me. So i thought, eureka, finally a way to use Mint, KDE4 is the solution.
So for the even more fun i have taken a look at the memory usage of Netrunner 14 x64 and Mint 17 KDE x64.
And to make this fun totally completed. I decided to right away take a look at CentOS7 KDE and Debian7 KDE versions. Im so astonished by the gorgeous Debian7 KDE look and feel. That even my years old adoration of it is somewhat restored. (No im not going to use it for the Desktop/Laptop because Suse has Yast. Which is actually rewritten in Ruby, so who knows. Maybe one day there will be a littlebit of Suse in every Distro. ;D). But im not fanatical. If some appliance works on this or that distro. So be it. Dont really care. But if you ask me i would prefer CentOS for a server.
Somewhere here i wrote some little time ago how i thought that Suse/Yast was slow:
http://circlesoftrust.blogspot.be/2014/05/the-green-hidden-gem-of-linux-community.html
But whole this topic proves the opposite.
The OpenSuse and Debian virtual machines were the fastest. It took double the time to install Netrunner or Mint KDE or Cinnamon.
The slowest was CentOS. (But its also the newest so dont judge it to quickly).
(This is why they are working on Fedora.Next and CentOS SIGs).
Peace :)
edit:
p.s. I understand that this sort of benchmarks are nothing serious. Maybe even CPU usage is influenced by the hosts CPU usage for running VMs. So this is not to be taken seriously. Just a pure speculation. On how much ram is needed to barely run any of this systems with KDE.
edit2;
Here, adding Fedora 20 x64 to the mix, for the sake of comleteness. :)
(also Mageia4 with Gnome3 and Unoobtu14)
